Date of Travel: Oct 2007 Flying from: Mahon Airport Flying to: Leeds Bradford Airport Class: Charter/Package Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Lesley Hirst Comments: Great flight - comfy, plenty of leg room, lovely crew but the plane was absolutely filthy. My husband had to ask for a cloth to wipe our seat trays as god only knows what they were coated in! Aircraft obviously need more time when turning around as the allotted time to clean them is not long enough as they all seem so grubby these days. Still the longer it's on the ground the less money the airline companies make but why should we have to fly in filth??
Date of Travel: Jul 2007 Flying from: Leeds Bradford Airport Flying to: Heraklion Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Ruth Pryce Comments: Excellent service both ways with BMI. All the crew including the pilots were very friendly and helpful. Great leg room and comfy seats. BMI had recently introduced a new food range which was delicious and came in great packaging. We would use BMI again.
Date of Travel: Mar 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Barbados Adams Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: david ottley Comments: Our first long haul flight with BMI and we were totally impressed. We took up a very cheap deal and chose to fly to and from London to Manchester with them too. All four flights were punctual, the aircraft decor and lighting were relaxing, the meals, apart from the breakfast upon relanding from Barbados, were qood and of sufficient quantity, and the crew were friendly. We thought that giving everyone a bottle of quality water after lunch was cleared away was a better idea than crew choosing when to come through with water or you having to ask for a small glass when required. The domestic flights disappointed only in that you have to pay even for a non-alcoholic drink, and on Manchester long-haul you have to pay for alcoholic drinks, which they lose points for against BA who currently provide it free, even on special deal fares.
Date of Travel: Jan 2007 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Chicago O'Hare International Airport Class: Business Recommended: No Submitted By: Brian Hawe Comments: We traveled from Manchester to Chicago with bmi with an onward UA connection to Seattle.
Our aircraft was late leaving from Manchester, so late that it was obvious before we left that our connection would be missed. When I asked the staff at Manchester what flight we were to travel on from Seattle we were told that they wouldn't look at it until we were airborne, and that we should go to see UA staff in Chicago - "they are used to dealing with this problem"!!! It seems this flight is often late; indeed my son used it twice in 10 days before we went out, and one of his flights was equally as late as ours - that's a 67% late departure record - worse than the worst charter airline.
The disaster at Chicago is detailed under a separate report on United Airlines, but suffice to say it was not smooth running.
The aircraft are new, bright and airy. The food is well below par for what I would expect from bmi - certainly gone downhill from when they started their transatlantic routes a few years ago. The service has gone downhill too; some staff is good, some downright bad and the rest mediocre. Seat pitch is Ok, but First choice is better on their long haul fleet and they are charter airline.
For the prices they are charging bmi need to get their act together, and their time keeping needs to improve if they are to succeed with their hub and spoke operations in association with UA at Chicago.
For a British airline flying transatlantic they are a big let down and only marginally better than their US competition - but the competition is far, far, cheaper! Certainly not my airline of first choice any more.
Date of Travel: Nov 2006 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: Las Vegas McCarran International Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Malcolm Chester Comments: Wonderful return flights with bmi Manchester - Las Vegas. Everything worked perfectly. Check-in at both airports, staff on the ground and onboard were excellent, food and entertainment all worked together to give the best long haul service we've ever experienced - far better than BA and Delta on the North American routes.
Entry to USA through Las Vegas is superb - 30 minutes from arriving at the gate to being through all checks and collecting baggage to being out on the street. Well done bmi.
Date of Travel: Feb 2005 Flying from: Manchester Airport Flying to: London Gatwick Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Mr D Botting Comments: Flight was 20mins late, but staff were friendly and helpful. Plane was in good condition, seats were comfortable and plenty of room (I was in over wing seat). Arrival gate was close to runway, minimizing taxing and we could walk to the terminal i.e. no bus.
Waited for luggage for 30 mins.
Overall ok experience would use again but with hand luggage only!
Date of Travel: Feb 2005 Flying from: London Heathrow Airport Flying to: Manchester Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Mr Chris Lalor Comments: I returned early and had to change my flight. The privilege of doing so cost me nearly 300 Euros. Frankly that's outrageous. The young lady changing the flight was clearly embarrassed, rightly so. How on earth can an airline justify such charges? I really felt sick.
Needless to say I've taken BMI off my Christmas card list.
I hope they go bankrupt, I really do.
Date of Travel: Nov 2003 Flying from: London Heathrow Airport Flying to: Tenerife South Reina Sofia Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: M Bell Comments: We flew with BMI British Midland in November of 2003. When we boarded the aircraft the Crew polite and friendly and showed us to our seats.
There was good leg room on the flight, although it got a bit cramped when the person in front put there seat back!
Time keeping was bad though. We departed 35 minutes late.
Inflight meals were tasty and there was plenty of choice on the drinks trolley.
