Date of Travel: May 2007 Flying from: Plymouth City Airport Flying to: London Gatwick Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: Mike Sargeant Comments: My difficulties highlight a problem with small budget airlines. If the plane has a technical breakdown, they have no standby aircraft. My partner and I were due to fly from Plymouth to Gatwick, a journey time of about 1hr 45mins as the plane goes via Newquay.
The aircraft experienced technical problems on the inbound flight and had to land at Exeter. We were never told the exact cause of the problem (lightning strike?), and kept waiting until the flight time arrived. I suggest it was clear the plane was not going to make it much earlier. These airlines run on scant resources so there was no replacement aircraft and the only alternatives were cash back or a taxi. We choose the latter and experienced a 5 hour road trip.
I may use the airline again as the flight down was OK but bear in mind that when things go wrong, they can go badly wrong.
Date of Travel: Jun 2006 Flying from: Newquay Cornwall International Airport Flying to: London Gatwick Airport Class: Economy Recommended: Yes Submitted By: David Fitz Comments: This is the friendliest airline that I have ever traveled on. The staff are friendly, helpful and always have a "nothing is too much trouble" attitude. You have to buy refreshments, but as their flights are only short this doesn't matter. Their timekeeping is also excellent. Their leather upholstery and spacious, roomy seats are definitely 10/10 for comfort. All in all, maybe some of the other airlines should take a leaf out of Air Southwest's book!
They are the main provider of year-round flights to and from the southwest and are doing wonders by introducing people to the joys and beauty that Cornwall has to offer.
